Cause-Effect: Thought Suppression

This was written for an assignment that simply asked us to write an essay/paper in the "Cause-Effect" style. I had so much more to write but I was already over the prescribed limit (as usual) so I had to be brief in some places where I'd have liked to expound. My proofreader didn't get its cause-effect at first since I didn't hammer it home in an obvious and (in my opinion) poorly done style. The professor got it, though.

In many hidden, shrouded corners of this vast and different
world, there lie powers and struggles beyond the line of human
vision. In many deep and dark crevasses of society there sits a
burning ember of desire waiting to blossom into a flame of deceit.
Inside desolate and empty hearts there waits a vengeance different
from the wrather of evil. And, even about the bright plains of the
brilliant stellar gem, there is the potential for such deviation
from progression. These blasphemous thoughts, these destructive
ideals, ebb the tide of unfettered journey into the realm of
utopian success. Such things are much versed and oft written
about. Such things are present in the everyday lives of many poor
souls, trapped in a colorless place. Everyday the feel a scream
inside, because they face such terrible tragedy with each new dawn.
This is no evil alien race, or even spirits loosened from the dark
gates of Hades. This evil is suppression of intelligent thought.
In many nations of the world, even now, there is still a constant
struggle to be free. Freedom is never complete without the ability
to freely think. However, in such places, there is no liberty. In
those countries, each facet of life and survival is severely
crippled because of the lack of intelligent thinking. Indeed, it
is in these iron-curtained microcosms that life is as stale as the
air. Unfortunately, those responsible for such destruction also
want the ability to wreak havoc on the remainder of the free world;
they wish to enslave the rest of the world in proverbial chains of
the mind. They cater to the belief that depriving the world of the
fresh, exciting pleasure of free intelligent thought will cleanse
society and remove all problems in the world. This belief is not
only wrong, but it is criminal and unjust. Depriving the world of
free, intelligent, boundless thought will lead to the eventual
destruction of society.

One popular realm of boundless theorizing is the concept of
religion. Religious discussions and theories open the door to
amazing concepts and hypothesis, most of which are beyond complete
literal comprehension. However, there are many groups determined
to suppress such thought throughout society. The Christian Church
originally started as a new belief to an even older religion. But,
as time passed, the Church began tightening its grip upon her
followers, coaxing them into blissful submission to her will. As
a result, many great minds and thinkers who could have
revolutionized religion and knowledge of the ultra-world became
quiet. Instead of standing up high and proclaiming new ideals,
they quietly echoed the vestiges of the past, accepting htem, if
nothing else, for the status quo. The Church then became more
dominant, and new ideas and religious possibilities slowly became
stamped out. Even to this day, the world has not recovered from
the masses still under the powers of the Church. Another proponent
of suppression is the power of the masses. The masses typically
have always been a force to reckon with. While there will always
be dissention from the ranks, there generally exists a common
belief among people: If someone challenges the mental stamp of the
masses, that person will be put down and excommunicated. If each
person was independent and a free thinker, there would be no
problem with the masses. Unfortunately, as evidenced by the power
of the masses, the more people, the more suppressed the people are.
For this reason, the few voices of thought and ideas are lost in the
loud mumbling of the same passages. Therefore, religion has, in
many ways, often been the catalyst for thought suppression.

Another perplexing and frustrating fact of fascism occurs
within the realm of variety and tastes. People in many nations
have the right to make their own preferences and tastes, be it in
music, clothing, or another category. Variety in these lands
flourishes. However, in some places, there is no variety. Certain
corners of the world set-up the government in an omnipotent way.
The government controls all stores and economic movement. In this
way, the government can control what is displayed, worn, eaten,
listened to, and read. Because of this control, the people of
these countries are forced to lead a patterened existence. These
people are thoughtless and methodical.  Everyone is everyone else;
their lives are led in sickening monotony. They have nothing more
than a bleak grey sky to contrast the dark grey cobblestone of the
streets and buildings. As a result of government mandates,
there is no variety. Without variety, the ability to harbor new
thoughts or create new things diminishes and recedes. Due to the
bland life, all hopes and imagination are silenced, and thequality
of life continues to drop.

A fundamental freedom that intelligent thinkers enjoy is
the ability to make their own decisions. They are offered multiple
paths to take, and multiple options to choose from. Thinkers are
also able to make their own path, since tehre is nothing wrong with
deciding "none-of-the-above." Unfortunately, decisions are not
always free. In some parts of the globe, the people are given no
choice in almost all possible categories. For instance, they lose
their free will. A consequence of this shanghai is the people are
all the same; they follow a set pattern of life each day. They do
the same things, and think the same pre-defined thoughts. The
suppressors are the ones who almost program the people into being
this way. What occurs is a nation of androids, devoid of any
recognizable human forms. Also, people in such places are given no
choices in what they buy or use. They all go to the same shops to
purchase the same clothing and diversions. They even all enjoy the
same recreational events and parties. As a result of the monotony,
their land loses its aesthetic pleasure. There is no longer any
excitement to their world; their world loses anticipation and hope
in lieu of a dark, wispy cloud of suppression. Because of the lack
of decisions and choices, all pleasure in life itself dwindles to
a halt.

The main solstice of the intelligent thinker is the ability
to theorize and think in general. Many great men and women have
shown as bright as the north star with new ideals, facts, and
interesting hypotheses. These noble thinkers had no bounds, and no
limits to what they could think about and theorize. Because they
had freedom of thought, new inventions and scientific discoveries
were brought forth. Unfortunately, there are many who would
suppress independent and free thought. One type of suppression
occurs when thinking, in general, is limited to a certain context of
a subject. A thinker may not delve beyond a certain boundary of
only one certain subject. Everything but the single subject's
finite boundaries is taboo. A result of this suppression is a
fruitless and redundant waste of time. There is no true thought if
the only thinking is based on and limited to what is already known.
What happens is a constant re-hashing of previous thought, with
absolutely no room for new ideas. Another result is the
over-fascination with a single mindset. The people who are
supporessed become detached and submissive; they harbor no ideas
except what they are told about. Another type of suppression
occurs when thinking is limited to certain mundane and finite
subjects. The thinker is permitted only to study and experiment
within known subject matter. Because of this ignorant type of
suppression, the subjects become quickly dated and boring. The
unknown and the little-known about will remain unknown, and what is
known already will never be updated. This fact causes people to
make quick and easy explanations for the unknown, so as to deter
thinking about the subjects. Such was the case for the ancient
simple people, who used the gods of Olympus as the reasons for most
unknown facets of life and accepted such explanations without a
further thought. Therefore, a result of limited general thinking
causes ignorance and simplicity amongst people.

It is true that, for the most part, the world is open to
intelligent thought. New discoveries and exciting theories are
welcomed with open arms by the majority. However, there are
numerous factions of people who desire control and suppression of
thought. Where they come from are places that are failing, behind
or dismal. They have little economic or personal successes. Or,
in the case of the Church, they keep rigid control of people all
over the globe who in turn try to gain more coverts to confirmity.
But there are still more thoughts to be had, and discoveries to be
made, and it is the thinkers of the world who will be involved.
If any thinker is suppressed, the rest of the thinkers should
violently voice objection and fight for his or her freedom.
Because, in order to have a vibrantly alive world, the minds
of the living must never be held down; there are no limits to
knowledge.

Professor's Comments:
Rick - this definately fits the requirement of cause/effect. As you well know, the Reader [textbook] often has examples which are not clear, or they are to cut and dry. The pattern does not always have to be followed to the point that it is so obvious, it almost punches the reader in hte face. Overall, your ideas are very insightful, interesting, and yes, thought-provoking.

Freedom does have an enormous effect on an individuals ability to think freely. You have made some very good and strong points. Without always naming them, you have referred to other cultures. As much improvement as the U.S. needs, at least we ahve this freedom (even when others try to infringe their opinions upon us) when we have the individuality & strength to choose & take advantage of it. Once again, very impressive.
